a Christian Spiritual Retreat of Prayer
Wisdom of the Desert™
The desert is an interior detachment from every creature in which the soul neither pauses nor rests in anything.
-St. John of the Cross
The joy of simple encounter with God. The deep call to prayer...
The idea of retreat has long been an ancient discipline in spiritual traditions. Spiritual beings from every age and culture have gone off to the desert or mountains to seek a more centered way of being. The Celtic saints embraced the concept of peregrinatio, an open-ended journey. It was not uncommon for monks from ancient times and the early Christian Desert Fathers to set out with no destination; they left with only the whispered invitation within to go and seek, guided by the Holy Spirit to hear the voice of the living God in contemplative prayer. The idea was to leave behind the known and safe to find a deeper sense of holy awareness and knowing, an inner journey of the soul.
I will lead her into the desert, and speak to her heart.
~ Hosea 2:16
Christian spiritual retreat has for centuries been a way to fill our deep desire for communion with God, our spiritual hunger. We go into solitude to receive the sacred love of God. The circle becomes complete. As we receive the love of the Spirit, we can love ourselves in a complete way and through that, we grow our capacity to better love others. This is a time for connecting with the Creator and the soul He has implanted in each of us, a soul restless until it finds its rest in knowing the deep oneness we have in the Divine.

" The highest level of prayer is not a prayer for anything. It is a deep and profound silence, in which we allow ourselves to be still and know Him. In that silence, we are changed. We are calmed. We are illumined."
- Marianne Williamson
